HOW IT WORKS

Two real flies, mapped neuron by neuron: the female (FlyWire, 138,639 neurons) and the male from the 2026 Janelia and Google release (165,122 neurons). Both run the brain model from Shiu et al., Nature 2024.

Your tongue sets off the fly's looming detectors. If they fire its escape neurons in time, it's gone. Nothing is scripted: every lick replays one of 480 recorded brain runs.

Each fly is lopsided in its own way, so each has a weak side worth double. They are not the same side.

Set by us, not the brain: how the eye turns a tongue into detector firing, and the 12 ms the fly needs to get clear once its escape neuron fires. One male and one female, so this is two individuals, not a fact about all flies.
